HANNYA MASK
This type of traditional Japanese mask was primarily used in Noh Theatre, a form of classical Japanese dance drama which has its origins in the 14th century and it is still performed nowadays. This form of theatre uses masks for roles such as ghosts, deities and Demons. The Hannya mask specifically represents a jealous female Demon often characterised by horns, metallic eyes and a leering mouth. But the Hannya Mask is not only a demonic mask, it displays other human emotions like sorrow and torment. When looking at the maskStraight ahead it appears angry and dangerous but when looking from below it looks tormented as it was crying. Noh Theatre uses perspective to change the expression of the mask.
